Job Summary

Manages the provision of medical physics services to ensure the provision of high quality diagnostic imaging in an environment that meets recognized standards and in a manner that meets the service expectations of administration, staff, physicians, and patients.

  • Supervises medical radiation physicists and associate medical physicists within the Department in a manner that produces a responsive, motivated and highly competent team-oriented staff, while adhering to an established budget.
  • This includes hiring, coaching, counseling, conducting performance reviews, firing, etc.
  • Manages the development and implementation of quality assurance and evaluation programs for applicable diagnostic imaging equipment that insure high quality images and that meet regulatory requirements.
  • Develops and implements monitoring and reporting processes to insure timely provision of information and adherence to established policies and procedures.
  • Assesses new and developing diagnostic imaging technologies to support clinical and administrative decision makers.
  • Participates on Regional, Divisional and National committees and task forces to provide technical support to product selection and technology direction efforts.
  • Supports the activities of the Regional Radiation Safety Officer by utilizing medical physicists to provide on-site surveys of radiation safety compliance status, in-service radiation safety training to staff and physicians, and other radiation safety-related support as needed.
  • Manages an effective program of medical radiation physics instruction for diagnostic radiology residents sufficient to pass the physics portion of the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or American College of Medical Physics (ACMP) certification exam.
  • Provides the functions of a medical radiation physicist.
  • Functions within radiation oncology physics include, but are not limited to, the following: (a) treatment planning using the existing 3-D treatment planning computers; (b) stereotactic radiosurgery planning and assistance to the radiation oncologist; (c) HDR and LDR brachytherapy; (d) TLDs; and (e) research projects as time permits,
  • Providing support to the Radiation Oncology Residency program, clinical trials and research,assisting in assigning tasks and responsibilities within the Physics/Dosimetry section, working with the chief physicist, department chief, department director and assistant managers in the development of policies and procedures, strategic planning and new technologies.

Experience

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum five (5) years of post-graduate degree experience in medical physics as it applies to diagnostic imaging and radiation safety.

Education

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in medical physics, health physics or related field.

License, Certification, Registration

  • Therapeutic Medical Physics Certificate (ABR) from American Board of Radiology OR Diagnostic Medical Physics Certificate (ABR) from American Board of Radiology OR Nuclear Medical Physics Certificate (ABR) from American Board of Radiology

Additional Requirements

  • General knowledge of medical radiation physics, medical radiation safety and pertinent regulations.
  • General knowledge of computers and their applications in diagnostic imaging.
  • Experience in designing, implementing and monitoring quality assurance programs and equipment evaluation methods for diagnostic imaging devices.
  • Experience evaluating radiation safety status of machine and radioactive materials sources of ionizing radiation.
  • Effective communication skills demonstrated customer service skills and willingness to be part of a team.
  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supervising a professional technical staff preferred.
