Burbank Public Library is looking for a customer focused manager to lead our Community Connections Division. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic to lead the division that is most responsible for youth and adult programs, collection development, adult literacy, and our upcoming bookmobile service. Under general direction, to lead a division of the Library Services Department; engage with library patrons; carry out planning and project-based work; and perform related work as required.
Essential Functions
Manages a division of the Library Services Department, including personnel, planning, and the performance of project-based work; develops services for library patrons within the context of larger organizational plans; serves as a member of the management team; utilizes data in evaluation and decision making, including drafting library policy and procedures; assists in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, workplans, policies, and procedures; assists the Assistant Library Services Director and Library Services Director; effectively builds relationships with employees and outside agencies; proactively identifies trends, data, and relevant information and applies it to library services; provides excellent public service; leads or serves on committees as needed; supervises the library system as needed; may act in the absence of the next level of supervision as needed; oversees budgets and grants; travels to different library branches in the performance of assigned duties; supervises, trains, and evaluates employees; makes effective recommendations regarding hiring, promotions, and transfers, and disciplinary action as needed up to and including terminations.
Minimum Qualifications
Employment Standards:
Knowledge of - the American Library Association Code of Ethics and Bill of Rights; modern customer service principles and practices; principles and best practices of organizational leadership; budgeting; principles and practices of sound personnel management and supervision; professional writing.
Skill in creating and presenting professional presentations; making independent judgments and decisions based upon standard policy or procedures; completing research requests for library patrons; interacting and communicating tactfully with a diverse population; effectively managing a budget; gaining cooperation through discussion and persuasion; fostering a teamwork environment; operating modern computers and related software.
Ability to - work in a diverse environment as a team member; lead and motivate teams with integrity; identify, create, and carry out projects and plans; follow oral and written instructions; create accurate reports; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; prepare and administer division and project budgets; establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, community partners, vendors, and the public; supervise, evaluate, and direct the work of others; work a schedule that may include weekends and after hours; travels to different library branches in the performance of assigned duties.
Education/Training: Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for acceptable job performance as determined by the City. Example combination includes but is not limited to graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in library or information science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program and two years of supervisory experience in a library; or graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree and three years of supervisory experience in a library.
