Job Type:Full-time, Exempt

Work Hours: The workweek is normally considered to be 40 hours; however, greater emphasis is placed on meeting the responsibilities assigned to the position than on working a specified number of hours. Must be available evenings, holidays, and weekends as required.

Work Setting:In-person

Travel: Frequent travel by personal auto and occasional travel by air to meeting sites and other locations.

Summary of Functions:

The Director of Communications is responsible for leading OneLegacy's communications strategy to effectively reach and positively influence target audiences, with the goal of increasing enrollment on the Donate Life California Registry and securing consent for organ, eye, and tissue donation. This role oversees the organization's communications, public education, media, and community engagement functions, while enhancing OneLegacy's reputation and brand at the local, state, national, and international levels.

The Director serves as the organization's primary spokesperson, leads crisis communications, manages communication agency partnerships, and develops strategies that leverage traditional and digital media, community outreach, and coalition-building efforts. This individual also collaborates closely with the OneLegacy Foundation to support development, events, and donor family engagement initiatives.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Communications Strategy & Media Relations

1. Serve as OneLegacy's primary media spokesperson and oversee all press and public messaging.

2. Lead development and execution of integrated communications, marketing, and public relations plans in partnership with executive leadership and external agencies.

3. Oversee creative services, publications, newsletters, annual reports, video production, and digital platforms (website, intranet, and social media channels including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter/X, LinkedIn).

4. Develop and implement crisis communications protocols.

5. Cultivate advertising and promotional media campaigns to build awareness and strengthen OneLegacy's brand identity.

Community Engagement & Partnerships

6. Oversee strategic community engagement programs across Southern California's diverse communities.

7. Strengthen relationships with partner agencies, hospitals, medical groups, donor families, and key stakeholders.

8. Lead planning and execution of major events including Donor Remembrance Ceremonies, the Donate Life Run/Walk, the Donate Life Rose Parade Float, and the Donation & Transplant Symposium.

9. Plan and manage sponsorships, coalition partnerships, and legislative initiatives supporting the Donate Life mission.

Leadership & Operations

10. Lead, mentor, and develop the Communications/Public Education team, ensuring a culture of accountability, measurable outcomes, and excellence.

11. Manage departmental budget, strategic planning, and performance reporting tools.

12. Provide guidance and real-time feedback, oversee performance evaluations, and recruit/train new staff.

13. Collaborate with the OneLegacy Foundation on fundraising, development campaigns, and donor family support initiatives.

National & International Representation

14. Represent OneLegacy at key industry conferences (AOPO, AATB, UNOS, EBAA, NATCO, ATC, ISODP, etc.).

15. Serve on boards, committees, and councils to advance OneLegacy's leadership in donation and transplantation.

16. Partner with universities and research institutions to pursue grants focused on public education and social/behavioral interventions.

17. Speaks to professional and public audiences, as needed.

6. Ability to have high level of attention to detail, precision, accuracy, and customer satisfaction, with low error rates.

7. Ability to perform tasks, works effectively with little or no oversight, and exercise independent judgment and problem-solving skills to adopt of modify methods and standards to meet assigned duties/objectives.

8. Skilled in utilizing word processing, database and software programs, including Microsoft Outlook (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

9. Ability to dedicate time and energy to keep abreast of the latest information related to area of expertise and technology.

10. Skilled in effectively managing and prioritizing multiple projects and tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

11. Ability to utilize creative thinking/problem solving/proactive approach to business challenges to identify and respond to obstacles and/or issues.

12. Adapts to changing information, conditions/challenges, and/or frequent interruptions with a positive attitude and while meeting deadlines.

Job Qualifications and Requirements:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Marketing or Public Relations or equivalent work experience required. Master's Degree desirable.

Experience: Minimum 7–10 years progressive leadership experience in communications, public relations, or marketing. Minimum 5 years in senior-level management, including supervisory responsibilities. Demonstrated success in media relations, fund development communications, and community engagement. Must have 5+ years working with a Board/Advisory Committees. Legislative, non-profit, healthcare and/or public relations experience, preferred.

Salary Range: $118,000 - $170,000
