About the Role

Huntley Santa Monica Beach Hotel is seeking a highly skilled Hotel Engineer with a primary focus on HVAC and commercial refrigeration systems. This position is responsible for installation, repair, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance of the property's heating, cooling, and refrigeration systems, while also performing general engineering duties, including plumbing, electrical, and building maintenance.

The ideal candidate is an EPA-certified technician with strong hands-on skills in compressors, chillers, boilers, ice machines, walk-in coolers, split systems, and package units, plus the ability to quickly diagnose and resolve issues to ensure optimal guest comfort and safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, and repair commercial refrigeration systems (walk-in coolers/freezers, ice machines, reach-ins, beverage coolers, etc.) and all HVAC equipment (split systems, package units, fan coil units, chillers, and boilers).
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and control issues with HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
  • Perform refrigerant charging, recovery, and leak detection in compliance with EPA Section 608 standards.
  • Maintain, test, and calibrate building automation systems and thermostatic controls.
  • Execute preventive maintenance schedules for HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, and electrical systems to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
  • Perform basic to intermediate plumbing repairs (fixtures, water heaters, pumps, valves) and electrical work(lighting, outlets, breakers, motors).
  • Respond to service requests, including guestroom calls, public areas, kitchen equipment, and back-of-house systems.
  • Maintain accurate work orders, maintenance logs, and inventory records.
  • Assist with emergency systems (fire alarm, sprinkler, and life safety equipment) testing and repairs.
  • Support capital projects, renovations, and upgrades as assigned.
Qualifications
  • EPA Section 608 Universal Certification (required).
  • R-410A Safety & Handling Certification (required).
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in HVAC/R repair and maintenance; hospitality or commercial facility experience preferred.
  • Solid working knowledge of plumbing systems, including pumps, drains, and water heaters.
  • Proficiency in electrical troubleshooting and safe work practices (120/208/480V).
  • Strong understanding of mechanical drawings, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
  • Ability to prioritize, multitask, and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule (days, nights, weekends, and holidays).
  • Commitment to safety, guest satisfaction, and high-quality workmanship.
Physical Requirements
  • Stand, walk, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
  • Lift/carry up to 50 lbs. and operate hand and power tools.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying conditions.
