The Powertrain Calibration Engineer will be responsible for tuning engine and drivetrain software and hardware parameters to optimize performance, emissions compliance, and drivability. This position requires expertise in the use of calibration tools, dynamometer testing, and knowledge of modern powertrain systems and regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Utilize software calibration tools to tune engine and transmission controllers for performance, emissions, and OBD-II compliance.
- Operate engine and chassis dynamometers for performance validation and emissions testing.
- Develop and execute calibrations for a variety of applications, including:
- Emission-legal performance upgrades (superchargers, turbochargers, spark-ignition modifications)
- Racing applications (EFI systems, cylinder heads, camshafts, intake manifolds, and forced induction systems)
- Collaborate with emissions lab personnel to ensure proper certification testing results.
- Recommend and implement improvements to calibration processes and methodologies.
Required Experience & Qualifications:
- Minimum 5+ years of experience in automotive powertrain calibration (OEM or aftermarket).
- Deep understanding of spark ignition internal combustion engine theory and applications.
- Familiarity with modern OEM engine and transmission strategies.
- Working knowledge of emissions and OBD-II regulations as they apply to calibration.
- Hands-on experience with chassis and engine dynamometer operation for performance and emissions testing.
- Proficiency with common OEM and aftermarket software calibration toolsets.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work directly with technical teams and lab personnel.
Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
- Comparable experience in OEM spark-ignition powertrain calibration will also be considered.
Additional Requirements:
- Valid California Driver's License with a clean driving record.
- Ability to drive vehicles for testing and tuning purposes.
- Willingness to travel (1+ weeks at a time) to support emissions and environmental testing.
- Must successfully complete a drug screening and background check.
