ABOUT THE TRAINING PROGRAM: The district will provide training (unpaid) for eligible candidates at the discretion of the Transportation Department. Training will cover the following areas: school bus operation, applicable Motor Vehicle Code Sections, First Aid Review, and applicable sections of the Education Code. Those chosen for the training program will receive a letter inviting them to the training program.
Class will be held Monday through Friday, October 27 - October 31, 2025 from 7:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. each day, with a one - hour lunch (dates/hours are subject to change). All candidates are required to complete all five days of class to fulfill the mandatory material that must be covered per the California Education Code.
After completion of classroom instruction, successful trainees will then be scheduled for the California Highway Patrol rules and regulations examination.Behind the wheel trainingwill begin once the trainee has successfully obtained a Commercial Class B Permit from the California DMV. Approximate out of pocket cost for the trainee is $250.00 (i.e. DMV, CHP, and Dept. of Justice Fees).

SUBSTITUTE DRIVER OPPORTUNITIES:Trainees who successfully complete all portions of the training program will be considered for a substitute position with the district. Starting salary is $28.75 per hour. Substitute Bus Drivers fill in for permanent bus drivers who are absent.

JOB DUTIES OF A SCHOOL BUS DRIVER: Drives a school bus over any designated route according to established time schedules; picks up and discharges students at designated stops, communicating with teachers and parents, as appropriate; performs appropriate child check safety procedures; assists students with disabilities to board or leave the bus; transports students on special educational trips and to athletic events; supervises the conduct of students while on a school bus or on a school campus; administers first aid as appropriate; cleans, services, and performs daily safety checks on assigned vehicle; checks vehicles for proper maintenance and safety; keeps trip records and makes simple reports; performs overtime driving duties as assigned; and picks up and delivers vehicles and materials as assigned.

MARGINAL DUTIES: Performs simple clerical and inventory duties as assigned; and performs a variety of non-bus driving duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience: One year of experience in the operation of a motor vehicle. Some experience working with school-aged children is desirable.
LICENSE: Must possess and maintain a valid Class C California Driver License and remain insurable at the standard insurance market rate. Must have a safe driving record and not be an assigned risk.
AGE REQUIREMENT: Must be 18 years of age to drive a school bus.
